  • Instructional Modality Code: LEC

Describes the traditional classroom setting. An In-Person course requires students to attend all class sessions in person at a designated campus location, such as a classroom or lab. While instructional materials and resources may be available in the Canvas LMS, physical attendance is mandatory for all scheduled meetings.

    Key Characteristics:

    • In-Person Instruction: 100% of instructional time occurs in a physical classroom or lab setting.
    • Course materials may be supplemented through Canvas, but online activities do not replace in-person instruction attendance.
    • Students must attend all scheduled in-person sessions as per the course schedule.
  • Instructional Modality Code: BLEC

A Blended Lecture course integrates both in-person and online instructional components, with a greater emphasis on in-person instruction while incorporating online learning as a secondary component.

    Key Characteristics:

    • In-Person Instruction: More than half (51% or more) of the total instructional time occurs in a physical classroom setting.
    • Online Instruction: The remaining instructional time is conducted online, either synchronously (live) or asynchronously (self-paced).
  • Instructional Modality Code: BOLC

A Blended Lecture course integrates both in-person and online instructional components, with a greater emphasis on online instruction while incorporating in-person learning as a secondary component.

    Key Characteristics:

    • Instructional Format: More than half of the total instructional time occurs online, either synchronously (live) or asynchronously.

The remaining instructional time is conducted in-person.

  • Instructional Modality Code: OLC

An Online (Asynchronous) course is delivered entirely online with no required in-person meetings on campus. Instruction is facilitated through the Canvas LMS, and students complete activities and assignments independently within set deadlines. Faculty interaction will be conducted via email, announcements, chat, discussion forums or other online tools. Some courses may require synchronous (live) sessions.

    Key Characteristics:

    • Instructional Format: 100% online with no required in-person class meetings.
    • Instruction is primarily asynchronous, meaning students engage with course materials and complete assignments on their own schedule while meeting weekly deadlines. Some courses may require synchronous (live) sessions.
  • Instructional Modality Code: OLCS

An Online (Synchronous) course is delivered entirely online with no required in-person meetings on campus. Instruction is conducted through scheduled live virtual sessions using platforms such as Microsoft Teams, allowing real-time interaction between instructors and students. Additional asynchronous activities and assignments may be required in Canvas.

    Key Characteristics:

    • Instructional Format: 100% online with mandatory scheduled live virtual sessions.
    • Students must attend real-time online lectures or activities at designated times.
    • Asynchronous Component: Additional coursework may be completed asynchronously in Canvas.
    • Scheduling Requirement: Days and times of the virtual or live meetings must be listed on the schedule.
  • Instructional Modality Code:  FLEX

A HyFlex course offers students the flexibility to choose between in-person and online participation on a session-by-session basis. Instruction is delivered simultaneously to both in-person and online students, allowing for a synchronous learning experience.

    Key Characteristics:

    • Flexible Participation: Students can attend in person or join live online (synchronous) sessions remotely.
    • Instructor Location: The instructor conducts class sessions from a designated classroom at a scheduled time, with live streaming for online participants.
    • Seat Time: Varies depending on students' mode of participation; in-person attendance is optional.
